Nature based Solutions

Nature's unpaid work

Nature-based solutions are nature-inspired and nature-based actions that generate environmental, social and economic benefits and help build resilience. An excellent example is the natural ability that forests have to act as filters and reduce significantly the water treatment costs.

The concept is based on and intrinsically related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Although the concept is quite broad, the Foundation's focus on this theme prioritizes actions related to the increase of the natural water infrastructure. In this sense, it acts directly on the strategic agendas for Water, Climate and Environmental Service Expenses.

Oasis Network

Solutions based on nature and sharing

An example of an innovative solution, the Oasis Network in its acceleration program, works to connect strategic players (including investors, projects or institutions) who are committed to solving current problems through Nature based Solutions.

With the expertise gained over 12 years of working with Oasis, Boticário Group Foundation helps to share experiences that have the potential to accelerate and strengthen other initiatives.

And it happens through promoting experience exchanges between partners from several sectors and agendas, which would not necessarily connect in any other way. With a very clear purpose: collaborate to nature’s conservation.

Climate change

A challenge that requires commitment

Several human activities issue gases like CO2, CH4 and N2o, the main greenhouse gases. Some activities, such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation, intensify global warming, causing changes in the planet's climate system. This means that the seasons in the year and the rainy seasons we are used to become increasingly unpredictable, and natural species and ecosystems become even more threatened.

Considering this scenario, several countries, including Brazil, have pledged to work against global climate change, with the goal of containing the rise in global average temperature. Based on this commitment, the Paris Agreement was signed in 2015, during the 21st United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change [COP21].

Generating scientific knowledge and ways to influence public and private policies, the Boticário Group Foundation directs efforts to consider nature conservation through public and private mitigation strategies (GHG emission reduction).

Ecosystems based Adaptations

Using ecosystem and biodiversity services as part of a strategy for adapting people and communities to the negative effects of climate change: this is the Ecosystem based Adaptation concept.

Well-preserved natural environments increase our resilience to the negative effects of climate change. In addition, protected natural areas are strategic because carbon captured from the atmosphere by vegetation is stored in both biomas (plants and animals) and soil.
